The USS Carl M. Levin, an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer of the U.S. Navy, was spotted equipped with a new launcher for unknown weapons, according to the outlet The War Zone.
According to the report, although not immediately recognizable, the equipment was seen in the background of a photo posted by the U.S. Marine Corps on April 8, 2026. The image was taken on March 29 in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, where the Levin is stationed.
The launcher was identified by the Japanese blog OSINFO, which shared details about the unknown equipment on social media. In the image, it can be seen installed at the aft end of the deck, between the destroyer’s port-side torpedo tubes and its rear Mk 41 Vertical Launch System (VLS) array.

From what can be observed in the image, the new launcher appears to have multiple cells. Whether it can rotate or is fixed in place is not entirely clear, but it seems likely that it can, especially given what appears to be a circular mount that could allow it to elevate for firing.
It is not known what the launcher fires or what its purpose is. TWZ emphasized that there is a possibility it could be some type of counter-drone system, but when compared to known interception systems, the design of the launcher installed on the Levin does not match any of them.
For this reason, there is also the possibility that the launcher integrated into the Levin serves other purposes beyond counter-drone roles. As pointed out by TWZ, it could be a launcher for drones, including kamikaze drones or decoys.
In any case, even though its exact purpose remains unclear, the new launcher at the aft end of the USS Carl M. Levin highlights how the capabilities of Arleigh Burke-class destroyers continue to evolve.
